10-Day Kenya Safari Package from Nairobi (Best Kenya Safari Itinerary)
10 day Kenya safari itinerary
Hell’s Gate National Park is one of Kenya’s most unique wilderness destinations. It is a raw, rugged part of the Great Rift Valley. You can explore it on foot, by bike, or by climbing its volcanic cliffs. Unlike most parks in the country, Hell’s Gate puts you in the middle of the action. No vehicle is needed.
At just 68 square kilometres, Hell’s Gate is relatively small by Kenya standards, but packs an extraordinary punch. It is also one of the national parks closest to Nairobi. This makes it a great safari choice for travelers with limited time.It is also a good option for travelers on a tighter budget.
And if the landscape looks vaguely familiar — that’s because it is. The ochre-colored gorge inspired Disney’s The Lion King. It also appeared in the film Tomb Raider: Cradle of Life.
At PMK Tours, we offer fully guided day trips and multi-day packages to Hell’s Gate. You can also combine your trip with Lake Naivasha, Mount Longonot, or the Masai Mara.
Where Is Hell’s Gate National Park?
Tucked deep in the Great Rift Valley near Naivasha, Hell’s Gate National Park sits 1,560 to 2,187 metres above sea level. The park is 110 km northwest of Nairobi and 18 km from Naivasha town. The drive from Nairobi takes around two hours via the Nairobi–Nakuru highway.
Its closeness to the capital makes it the top national park for a Nairobi day trip. It is also one of East Africa’s best-value safari experiences.
Cycling is a popular activity in Hell’s Gate National Park. Visitors can ride its scenic trails at their own pace. The park offers well-maintained bike paths that wind through open grasslands, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape and opportunities to spot wildlife such as giraffes and zebras. Bikes can be hired at the Elsa Gate entrance. Hell’s Gate is the only KWS park where visitors can bring and use their own bicycles on designated trails.
Ol Njorowa (Lower Gorge) is perhaps the most well-known section of Hell’s Gate. The canyon’s stunning, water-eroded walls rise to the sky. They create large, echoing spaces and narrow passages. In some places, only one person can pass. A local guide is mandatory for hiking the Lower Gorge due to past flash floods and narrow terrain.
Deeper inside the gorge, you’ll find Hell’s Kitchen, where geothermal steam jets rise from the ground. Next is the Devil’s Bedroom, where visitors for generations have carved their names on the cave walls.
Standing at a dizzying 25 metres, Fischer’s Tower is a rugged mass of rock that is a remnant of an ancient volcano, named after German explorer Gustav Fischer who visited the park in 1883. Fischer’s Tower offers a popular rock-climbing pitch with great views from the top. You may also spot a Rock Hyrax. Guides and equipment can be arranged at the tower itself.
Wildlife in the park includes African buffalo, zebra, eland, hartebeest, Thomson’s gazelle, hyena, hyraxes and baboons. The park is also home to serval cats and small numbers of klipspringer antelope and Chanler’s mountain reedbuck. Among the uncommon animals are lions, leopards, and cheetahs. There are over 103 species of birds in the park, including vultures, Verreaux’s eagles, augur buzzards, and swifts.
Because you rarely see large predators, you can cycle past grazing zebras, giraffes, impalas, and buffaloes.
Few parks in Africa allow this close view of wildlife.
After a long hike or ride, soak in the natural hot springs at Olkaria Geothermal Spa. It is a unique thermal pool, powered by volcanic energy that shaped the park’s dramatic landscape. Entry to this area is covered by your standard park entry fee, though the spa itself has a separate charge.
The Mervyns Carnelley Raptor Hide is a unique bird-viewing hide.
It has a one-way window.
This lets visitors view and photograph birds at close range. The hide is located above the Endachata campsite. With over 103 recorded species, Hell’s Gate is a serious birding destination.
Hell’s Gate National Park is surrounded by Maasai communities, which can be explored while on safari. You’ll have the opportunity to gain insight into the traditions and lifestyle of these fascinating African cultures.
Hell’s Gate National Park is listed as a Scenic Park (Category B) in the KWS fee structure. It shares this category with Mount Longonot and Mount Elgon. This makes it one of the most affordable parks in Kenya.
The current non-resident adult entry fee is USD $50. Residents pay a much lower KES rate. Children under 5 enter free of charge.
All KWS park entry fees are paid online only through KWSPay, the digital portal integrated into eCitizen. Cash payments are not accepted at the park gates.
Note: Fees are subject to change. Contact PMK Tours and we’ll handle all park bookings on your behalf.
The dry season from June to October and January to February is best for hiking, cycling, and wildlife viewing. Roads are dry, and gorge trails are easy to reach. The wet season runs from March to May and November to December. It brings fewer tourists, greener landscapes, and lower hotel rates in Naivasha.
One important note: hiking up through the gorge during the rainy season is discouraged due to the life-threatening nature of flash floods on the gorge floors.
There are no lodge accommodation facilities inside the park except for Kenya Wildlife Service campsites, which are booked directly through KWS. However, many places to stay are available in Naivasha town. Options include luxury, mid-range, and budget stays.
Hell’s Gate also pairs perfectly as part of a longer Kenya safari — combining it with the Masai Mara (3–4 hours south), Lake Nakuru, or Amboseli.
By road from Nairobi: Take the A104 Uplands Road from Nairobi to Naivasha, then take the Moi South Lake Road leading to Lake Naivasha. The Elsa Gate is 25 km from the Moi South Lake Road junction, and public transport services operate on this route.
By air: Fly from Wilson Airport, Nairobi to Loldia Airstrip on the western side of Naivasha, then transfer by road to the park.
PMK Tours provides comfortable road transfers from Nairobi for all Hell’s Gate day trips and packages.
