In the world of the Zebra, infanticide can occur when a new dominant stallion takes over a herd. Zebra groups typically consist of one stallion, several mares, and their foals. If a rival male defeats or drives away the previous stallion, he may kill the young foals that are not his offspring. This behavior, while harsh, has an evolutionary purpose: it brings the mares back into reproductive condition more quickly, allowing the new stallion to sire his own offspring and pass on his genes.
