A morning in Ngorongoro is a lovely contrast to the open plains of the Serengeti. As you descend into the crater, the landscape opens into grassland, wetlands and pockets of woodland. Take your time, enjoy what your guide finds and let this remarkable place become part of a Tanzania journey that feels right for you.
Planning for 2027? PMK helps you combine Ngorongoro with the Serengeti, Tarangire or a Kenya safari, with a private itinerary, suitable accommodation and the transfer arrangements explained before you book.

Kenya and Tanzania together
Love the idea of the Masai Mara and Serengeti in one holiday? Explore our existing 11-day outline, which includes Ngorongoro. The final dates, overnight arrangements and services are agreed in your personalised proposal.
A Tanzania safari from Nairobi
Begin with your available nights and let us help choose a practical northern circuit. We can discuss Arusha, Tarangire, Serengeti and Ngorongoro, with Lake Manyara where it suits your time and interests. This is a tailored route rather than a fixed departure.
More time in the Serengeti
If big cats and the plains are your main reason for travelling, leave several nights for the Serengeti and add Ngorongoro as a contrasting experience. Camp location and your travel month shape the route.
What makes Ngorongoro special?
The crater is a volcanic caldera within the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. It is not a separate TANAPA national park. Its mix of habitats supports wildlife including lions, buffalo, elephants and black rhino. Sightings are unpredictable, so enjoy the whole landscape rather than making the day depend on seeing one animal.
The wider conservation area includes highland scenery and other places of interest. A crater drive, an Oldupai Gorge visit and a guided highland activity are different experiences: ask which ones appear in your itinerary and whether their permits and fees are included.
Crater rim or Karatu: where should you stay?
A crater-rim stay can appeal if you want the highland setting and proximity to the crater. Compare the actual lodge location, access route, room type and price. A room with a crater view should be specifically confirmed rather than assumed.
Karatu gives you another range of lodges and an alternative base for the northern circuit. It adds road travel to a crater visit, so look at your departure time and the onward journey as well as the nightly rate. The right choice is the one that gives you a comfortable day within your budget.
Tell us if you are travelling with children, celebrating a honeymoon or prefer a particular room layout. We will check suitable options for your dates. Accommodation is confirmed in your written proposal.
How many nights should you allow?
Start by protecting time for your crater visit rather than squeezing it between long transfers. One or two nights in the Ngorongoro/Karatu area may work within a wider itinerary, depending on where you arrive from and where you go next. We will compare the full route before recommending a stay.
If you are also visiting the Serengeti, choose fewer accommodation changes when that gives you more wildlife time. Do not assume you can explore distant Serengeti regions and visit the crater comfortably on the same day.
When should you visit in 2027?
Ngorongoro can be considered across the year. Choose your dates around your whole holiday: a Serengeti migration interest, family school dates and accommodation preferences can point to different travel windows. Highland conditions can feel cooler than the plains, so bring layers.
For migration-focused trips, the region you stay in matters. Ndutu belongs to the wider Serengeti ecosystem and is different from a crater-floor drive. Tell us whether you are interested in calving, northern migration activity or a general wildlife safari. We will explain the route choices without promising a particular sighting.
Getting to Ngorongoro from Nairobi
A Tanzania-focused road journey can connect Nairobi with Arusha through Namanga before continuing into the northern circuit. A combined Masai Mara and Tanzania safari involves a different transfer plan. Flights may be another option when suitable connections operate, with baggage, immigration and ground transfers considered together.
Your proposal should identify the intended border crossing, guide and vehicle arrangements, camp locations and departure point. Ngorongoro is not a short day trip from Nairobi. We will help you compare a Nairobi start with an Arusha or Kilimanjaro arrival if that is more comfortable for your plans.
What should the safari price include?
Ask for a quote for your dates, party size and room preferences. For Ngorongoro, distinguish conservation-area entry from crater vehicle/service charges and any additional activities. Fees and eligibility categories should be checked against the current NCAA tariff schedule; a current schedule is not a guarantee of 2027 prices.
- Named accommodation and the number of nights
- Meals, drinking water and any drinks included
- Private vehicle and guiding arrangements
- Conservation-area entry, the crater visit and applicable vehicle charges
- Border transfers and any quoted local flight connections
- Optional activities, payment and cancellation terms
PMK arranges the safari and local travel services stated in the proposal. International flights to East Africa, entry documents, insurance, tips and personal purchases should be checked separately.
Ngorongoro safari questions
Can I combine Ngorongoro with Serengeti?
Yes. They can form part of a northern Tanzania itinerary. We choose the overnight locations and travel days around your dates and the Serengeti region you want to explore.
Is the Ngorongoro crater visit private?
Ask for a private vehicle for your own travelling party in the proposal. Private guiding does not make the crater exclusive: other visitors use the authorised roads too.
Can we visit with children?
Share their ages and your preferred pace. We will check room options and activity suitability, and build rest time around the driving.
Will we see a black rhino?
It is a possibility, not a guarantee. Your guide will look for wildlife while following the area’s rules and current conditions.
Can we add Tarangire or Lake Manyara?
Yes, when your available nights support the extra stop. Explore Tarangire safari options and Lake Manyara safari options, then tell us what you would most enjoy.
