Plan the whole journey, not just the airfareFlights from the USA to Kenya: nonstop or connecting?
PMK does not book or ticket international flights. This section is additional planning information. Book your international tickets directly with an airline or through your own flight agent. Share your proposed arrival and departure times with PMK before paying so we can check how they fit your Kenya safari.
The nonstop option: New York JFK to Nairobi
Kenya Airways operates the New York John F. Kennedy (JFK) to Nairobi Jomo Kenyatta (NBO) route. This is an option to compare if you can reach JFK conveniently and prefer to avoid an overseas connection. Kenya Airways also describes single-ticket U.S. connections through JFK with its airline partners. Check the operating carrier, departure dates and ticket conditions for your actual journey. See Kenya Airways’ current flight search and its U.S. connection information.
Nonstop applies to the JFK–Nairobi segment. If you first fly to New York from another U.S. city, your complete trip still has a connection. Compare the full journey from your home airport rather than only the transatlantic flight.
Connecting through a hub
Depending on your U.S. departure airport and dates, examples to investigate include KLM via Amsterdam (AMS), Qatar Airways via Doha (DOH) and Emirates via Dubai (DXB). These are route examples to check with the airlines, not a promise of an available one-stop itinerary from every U.S. city.
Our planning recommendation: choose the simplest reasonably priced itinerary from your own airport. A nonstop flight can reduce transfer steps, but a well-timed connection can be a better overall fit. Neither option is always the fastest, cheapest or most reliable for every traveler.
Before you buy your tickets
- Compare a through ticket first. Ask whether the full connection is issued on one ticket and what help applies after a delay. Separate tickets can require baggage collection and rechecking, and missed onward flights may be at your expense. British Airways explains these distinctions in its flight-connection guidance; check your own airline’s rules.
- Allow a realistic layover. Follow the airline’s airport-specific connection requirements and allow extra time for terminal changes, baggage collection or assistance. A short advertised connection is not equally suitable for every traveler.
- Check transit requirements. Your passport, airport transfer and any plan to leave the airport can affect which documents you need. Confirm with the relevant government and airline before booking.
- Use the arrival date in Kenya. Overnight flights and time-zone changes can put your landing on a different calendar date from your U.S. departure. Share the local arrival date and flight number with us.
- Consider a Nairobi night. We generally suggest allowing rest before a long safari drive and avoiding a tight, separately booked onward safari flight after an international arrival. We will check the timing for your itinerary; Nairobi hotels and transfers must be included in your quote.
- Check all baggage limits. Your international allowance may differ from a small safari aircraft’s allowance. Confirm each carrier’s weight, size and bag-type rules before packing.
- Coordinate your flight home. Ask PMK to check the planned safari return against airline check-in requirements and transfer time. Some trips are better with a final Nairobi night.
- Review flexibility and live updates. Compare cancellation and change conditions before buying. Check airline operational notices and your booking again before departure. We do not publish a guaranteed cheapest booking day or fixed fare.
