The boat safari
Look for hippos and waterbirds from the water. Confirm the departure point, time on the lake and whether the boat is private for your party.
A different rhythm to your Kenya safari
Trade the road for the lake. Watch for hippos and waterbirds from your boat, then choose a walk through Crescent Island Game Sanctuary for a fresh perspective on Kenya’s wildlife.
Plan the experience with the PMK team as a day outing, an overnight lakeside break or part of your Kenya safari in 2026 or 2027. We help fit the activities to your pace, budget and onward journey.

Boats, birds and room to slow down
After time in a safari vehicle, Naivasha brings a welcome change of scene. You can enjoy the lake from a boat, spend time on foot in a designated sanctuary and leave space for a relaxed afternoon at your chosen hotel.
The appeal is variety. Couples gain another experience to share. Families can break up the game drive routine. Birdwatchers and photographers can explore a different habitat. Your ideal visit might be one activity, rather than a full list of stops.
Look for hippos and waterbirds from the water. Confirm the departure point, time on the lake and whether the boat is private for your party.
Explore sanctuary trails on foot, with opportunities to observe grazing wildlife and birds. Admission is separate from the boat transfer.
Allow more time for the experience by staying overnight. Choose a named property that suits your budget and the activity plan.
The experience begins at an agreed departure point on the lake. Once aboard, the open water and shoreline offer a different view from a road safari. Hippos may be visible in the water, while fish eagles and other waterbirds make the lake rewarding for birdwatching.
Bring your binoculars and keep the camera ready, but leave the wildlife space. Your boat operator chooses an appropriate route for the conditions. Sightings vary, and a boat outing should never involve approaching or disturbing hippos for a photograph.
Tell us whether your priority is birdwatching, a gentle scenic outing or combining boating with a sanctuary walk. We check the boat arrangement and proposed duration, rather than assuming every outing offers the same experience.
Boat safari and island transfer are different details. A transfer gets you to the sanctuary. A lake sightseeing outing adds time on the water. Ask for both to be described in your proposal if you want both.
Wear a correctly fitted life jacket and follow the boat guide’s instructions. Share children’s ages and boarding or mobility needs before booking so we can check suitability. Boating remains subject to weather and lake conditions.
Crescent Island Game Sanctuary offers walking trails and wildlife viewing in a lakeside setting. Being on foot changes what you notice: bird calls, the shape of the landscape and the chance to pause at your own walking pace within the sanctuary’s guidance.
Ask about a guide if you want help interpreting the wildlife and choosing a suitable route. Tell the PMK team how much walking you enjoy and whether anyone in the group needs a gentler outing. The sanctuary’s guides are limited, so a guided walk should be arranged in advance when it is important to your visit.
Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed. Keep your distance, follow the sanctuary’s instructions and do not treat wildlife as tame. Comfortable closed shoes, sun protection and drinking water make the walk more enjoyable.
Know which place you are visiting. Crescent Island Game Sanctuary does not operate boats. Boat companies and camps with similar names are separate businesses. As checked on 11 October 2026, the sanctuary lists boat access only; access is reconfirmed for your travel date.
The sanctuary advises that its admission is paid on arrival, with an official receipt. Boat charges are paid separately. PMK explains these arrangements in your proposal so an island transfer is not confused with an admission ticket. See the sanctuary’s official visitor information and current access guidance.
For a day trip from Nairobi, we work backwards from your pickup and return requirements to decide how much time is realistically available. An overnight Naivasha stay gives more flexibility when you want boating, walking and a slower afternoon.
Hell’s Gate National Park is a separate visit. If cycling and dramatic Rift Valley scenery appeal to you, explore our Hell’s Gate options. Give it its own activity period rather than trying to fit a long transfer, boat ride, sanctuary walk and substantial cycling trip into one afternoon.
Choose Naivasha if you want variety beyond game drives, enjoy birds and lake scenery or would value time on foot. For couples, it can be an unhurried chapter between wildlife destinations. For families, the right activity mix depends on the children’s ages and energy. For photographers, tell us whether you prioritise waterbirds or landscapes so the available time is used thoughtfully.
Accessibility needs are checked individually. Boat boarding and sanctuary paths may not suit every guest. Describe what you need before booking so we can discuss practical options.
The total depends on your travel dates, group size, pickup point, boat arrangement, activity duration and accommodation. There is no single price that covers every Naivasha visit. For 2027 travel, we reconfirm the charges and access conditions before you commit.

If your published safari itinerary includes a Naivasha activity, we confirm exactly what that inclusion covers. An optional sanctuary walk, extended boat outing or additional night is not automatically included. Your written proposal is the reference for the final arrangements.
These PMK itineraries visit Lake Naivasha. Use them as starting points, then ask us to confirm the boat outing, walking option and time available for your dates.
A focused Rift Valley and Mara journey. Compare the budget itinerary’s seasonal rates, named hotels, route map and activity inclusions. A sanctuary walk must be confirmed explicitly.
See the budget itinerary and ratesCombine Amboseli, Naivasha, Nakuru and the Mara on a private safari. Ask how the lake activity fits between the wildlife destinations and which optional additions suit the schedule.
Explore the seven day safariA longer route gives another starting point for discussing a Rift Valley activity day. Review the full itinerary before deciding on the boating and walking combination.
Explore the classic itineraryVisit six Kenya destinations with a Naivasha chapter between northern Kenya and the Mara. The private minivan itinerary offers a practical way to spread your budget across a broader journey.
Explore the ten day safariContinue the experience in the Mara. If your route visits the Masai Mara, you can also request an optional sunrise balloon safari. We check availability and the schedule rather than adding it automatically.
Your Naivasha hotel influences both the feel of the visit and transfers to the activities. Compare the location, room arrangement and meal plan alongside the price. A lakeside setting and a town hotel offer different ways to use your budget.
Avian Court is the named Naivasha stay in our published budget five day itinerary. Sopa is another property to discuss for a different accommodation style, subject to availability and a separate quote. Follow each property’s wildlife guidance, especially near the lake after dark.
You bring the priorities; the PMK team helps connect them to the practical plan. We coordinate the proposed pickup, activities and onward safari, identify the accommodation and explain the charges. You can decide with the details in front of you instead of piecing together unrelated bookings.
Plan directly with a Nairobi based operator licensed by Kenya’s Tourism Regulatory Authority. Meet the PMK team, compare our safari vehicles and explore the Naivasha destination guide.
No. A boat safari is an outing on the lake. A Crescent Island visit requires access to the sanctuary and separate admission. A transfer alone may not include a sightseeing boat route. Ask for all chosen elements to be listed in your quote.
Crescent Island offers sanctuary walking trails with opportunities to observe wildlife. Keep an appropriate distance and follow the sanctuary’s guidance. It is not permission to approach animals, and sightings cannot be guaranteed.
Send the children’s ages and your preferred walking pace. We check boat capacity, appropriate life jackets, boarding arrangements and activity suitability before confirming.
Only when your confirmed arrangement states that it is. A private road safari does not automatically include a private boat. Tell us your preference and we will check the available option and cost.
The time depends on your departure point, sightseeing route, transfer and walking preferences. We provide a proposed schedule for your trip. An overnight stay offers more flexibility than a short stop during a long travel day.
Bring closed walking shoes, sun protection, drinking water, a light rain layer and binoculars if you enjoy birds. Protect your camera from water and wear the supplied life jacket on the boat.
Yes, the combination can fit a suitable itinerary. Hell’s Gate and the Mara are separate visits with their own time and charges. We review transfer times before proposing the activity mix.
The operator decides whether lake conditions allow the outing. We explain the activity provider’s cancellation or rescheduling terms before booking and discuss feasible alternatives within your itinerary.
