Lakeside setting

The thing worth knowing about this resort is how it was built. Not a single tree was cut down during construction. Rather than clearing a plot and dropping a rectangular block on it, the main public building curves and weaves between the existing trunks, which is why the place feels like it grew there rather than landed.

Naivasha is the change of pace in a Kenyan itinerary. It is a freshwater lake in the Rift Valley, so instead of another game drive you get boat trips among the hippos, and Crescent Island where you can walk on foot among zebra and giraffe because there are no predators.

What makes this one different

The most useful stop for breaking up a long safari

Most itineraries put Naivasha between the Mara and Nakuru or Amboseli, and clients often treat it as a filler night. It is better than that. After three or four days of dawn game drives, a day of boat rides, walking safaris and an actual swimming pool is what stops the second half of the trip feeling like a slog.

When to come

Naivasha works year-round. It sits at altitude in the Rift Valley so it is cooler than the parks, and evenings can be genuinely chilly.

Birdlife peaks between November and April when migratory species arrive — over 350 species have been recorded around the lake.

Getting there

  • By road — about two hours from Nairobi, one of the easiest transfers in the country.
  • By road from the Mara — roughly four hours, which is why it sits so naturally between the Mara and the northern parks.
