10-Day Kenya Safari Itinerary: Amboseli, Ol Pejeta, Samburu, Naivasha, Nakuru & Masai Mara

Last updated September 2026

This is our best-selling itinerary and the most complete Kenya safari we run: 6 parks and reserves in 10 days — Amboseli, Ol Pejeta, Samburu, Lake Naivasha, Lake Nakuru and the Masai Mara — in one private trip from $2,650pp. It’s essentially our Culture & Photography route and our Classic route combined into a single, longer journey, so if you’ve read either of those, some of this will look familiar. Here’s the full day-by-day breakdown.

10 Days 6 Parks & Reserves From $2,650pp Private 4×4 Safari

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1

Nairobi to Amboseli National Park

Your guide picks you up from your Nairobi hotel or JKIA early morning for the roughly 4-hour drive south to Amboseli, passing views of the Great Rift Valley and the Chyulu Hills along the way. You arrive in time for lunch, then head out for an afternoon game drive looking for elephant, lion, cheetah and zebra against Kilimanjaro’s backdrop, finishing with sundowner drinks. Dinner and overnight at Amboseli Sopa Lodge or similar.

Day 2

Full Day in Amboseli

A dawn game drive catches Kilimanjaro at its most photogenic. Amboseli’s famous for its elephant herds, and you may see 50 to 100 at once near the swamp areas, alongside lion, hyena, jackal, hippo and hundreds of water birds. After lunch, an afternoon drive covers different areas of the park, with an optional evening Maasai village visit. Overnight again at your Amboseli lodge.

Day 3

Amboseli to Ol Pejeta Conservancy

An early game drive before breakfast, then a longer transfer north, back through the Nairobi area and onto the Laikipia Plateau, roughly 5 to 6 hours with stops. Ol Pejeta is home to 13 of the Big Five species including Najin and Fatu, the world’s last two northern white rhinos, and a visit to the rhino sanctuary is a genuine highlight. An afternoon game drive looks for lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard and cheetah, with an optional stop at the Jane Goodall Institute’s chimpanzee sanctuary. Dinner and overnight at Sweetwaters Serena Camp or similar.

Day 4

Ol Pejeta to Samburu National Reserve

A morning drive north to Samburu, roughly 3 hours, a rugged reserve bisected by the Ewaso Ng’iro River. An afternoon game drive looks for the Samburu Special Five — reticulated giraffe, Grevy’s zebra, beisa oryx, gerenuk and Somali ostrich — none of which live further south in Kenya. The riverine habitat also means good leopard sightings. Dinner and overnight at Samburu Sopa Lodge or similar tented camp.

Day 5

Full Day in Samburu

Samburu is at its best at dawn. A morning drive follows the river, where crocodiles sun on the banks and elephant herds come to drink, while the afternoon explores drier terrain for the rarer northern species. There’s an optional visit to a Samburu community village. Sunset drinks at the river close out the day, followed by dinner and overnight.

Day 6

Samburu to Lake Naivasha

A longer drive south to the Great Rift Valley and Lake Naivasha, roughly 4 to 5 hours. In the afternoon you board a boat safari among hippos and large flocks of waterbirds, with an optional guided walking safari on Crescent Island, where giraffe, zebra and hippo roam with no predators around. Sunset on the lake is a highlight. Dinner and overnight at a lakeside property.

Day 7

Lake Naivasha to Lake Nakuru

A short drive, about an hour, to Lake Nakuru National Park, leaving most of the day for game drives once you arrive. Nakuru is known for its flamingos when conditions are right, its rhino sanctuary, and Rothschild’s giraffe. Look for black and white rhino, lion (sometimes tree-climbing), leopard and waterbuck around the alkaline lake and its acacia forest. Dinner and overnight at Lake Nakuru Lodge or similar.

Day 8

Lake Nakuru to Masai Mara National Reserve

A morning game drive in Nakuru before heading west to the Masai Mara via Narok, with a stop at Great Rift Valley escarpment viewpoints along the way. Budget 5 to 6 hours for this drive rather than the shorter estimate sometimes quoted, since the Narok-to-Mara stretch is slower going than the tarmac before it. You arrive at your Mara camp in time for a late-afternoon game drive, then visit a nearby Maasai village in the evening to experience traditional customs, dance and daily life. Dinner and overnight at your Mara camp or lodge.

Day 9

Full Day in the Masai Mara

A full day dedicated to the Mara. You set out at dawn for the best light and the most active game viewing, following resident lion prides and, seasonally, the Great Migration herds crossing the Mara River. A picnic lunch out in the reserve keeps you among the wildlife before an afternoon game drive exploring a different part of the ecosystem, depending on where the action is. Dinner and overnight at your Mara camp or lodge.

Day 10

Masai Mara to Nairobi (Departure)

After a final relaxed breakfast, you begin the drive back to Nairobi, roughly 5 to 6 hours via Narok, pausing at the Rift Valley escarpment viewpoints for one last look at the landscape you’ve crossed. Your guide drops you at your hotel, JKIA, or anywhere in Nairobi in time for onward travel.

How Long Are the Drives?

This is the longest and most complete of our itineraries, covering six destinations, so the driving adds up. The longest legs are Amboseli to Ol Pejeta and the two Nakuru/Mara/Nairobi transfers on Days 8 and 10, each running 5 to 6 hours once you account for the Narok road, so it’s worth budgeting these as full travel days rather than quick transfers.

RouteApprox. Drive Time
Nairobi → Amboseli4 hours
Amboseli → Ol Pejeta5 to 6 hours
Ol Pejeta → Samburu3 hours
Samburu → Lake Naivasha4 to 5 hours
Lake Naivasha → Lake Nakuru~1 hour
Lake Nakuru → Masai Mara5 to 6 hours
Masai Mara → Nairobi5 to 6 hours

If 10 days and six destinations is more than you’re after, our 8-day Classic safari covers four of these in less time, and our 8-day Culture & Photography safari covers the Samburu and Ol Pejeta side in a shorter trip.

Best Time to Go

With six destinations on this itinerary, timing plays out differently at each one. The Masai Mara portion is best from July to October, when the Great Migration is often crossing the Mara River. Kilimanjaro’s visibility from Amboseli is clearest in the drier months (June to October, January to February). Samburu, Ol Pejeta and Lake Nakuru all hold up well year-round. For the full month-by-month picture of the Mara specifically, see our best time to visit the Masai Mara guide. You’ll cross a wide range of altitudes and habitats on this route, so pack for both cold mornings and hot, dusty afternoons — our what to wear on a Kenya safari guide covers it.

This is our best-selling itinerary, and it runs on private dates in Budget, Mid-Range or Luxury accommodation tiers depending on what you choose.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which parks does the 10-day Kenya safari visit?

Six in total: Amboseli National Park, Ol Pejeta Conservancy, Samburu National Reserve, Lake Naivasha, Lake Nakuru National Park, and the Masai Mara National Reserve, covered over 10 days from Nairobi.

How much driving is involved over 10 days?

A significant amount, since this route covers six destinations across Kenya’s south, north and Rift Valley. The longest legs are Amboseli to Ol Pejeta and the two Nakuru/Mara/Nairobi legs, each around 5 to 6 hours. Shorter legs like Naivasha to Nakuru take about an hour.

How long does the Nakuru-to-Mara drive really take?

Budget 5 to 6 hours for this leg via Narok. It’s one of the longer transfers on this route, similar in length to the Mara-to-Nairobi return leg on Day 10, so plan for a full travel day rather than a quick transfer.

What’s the difference between this and the 8-day itineraries?

This 10-day route essentially combines our 8-day Classic safari (Amboseli, Naivasha, Nakuru, Mara) with our 8-day Culture & Photography safari (Samburu, Ol Pejeta, Mara) into one longer trip covering all six destinations, rather than choosing between them.

What accommodation tiers are available?

Budget (camping), Mid-Range (lodges) and Luxury (premium lodges), selectable when you request a quote. Named properties on the standard itinerary include Amboseli Sopa Lodge, Sweetwaters Serena Camp, and Samburu Sopa Lodge, or similar.

How much does the Kenya e-visa cost?

$53 per person, applied for online before you travel. It’s not included in the safari price. See our Kenya visa requirements guide for the current application process.

Will I see the Great Migration on this trip?

It depends on timing. The migration is typically in the Masai Mara from July to October. This itinerary’s Mara days (9 and part of 8) fall wherever you schedule your trip, so travelling in that window gives you the best odds of migration river crossings.

Can this itinerary be customised or shortened?

Yes โ€” dates, accommodation tier and destinations can all be adjusted. If 10 days is more than you have, our 8-day Classic or 8-day Culture & Photography itineraries each cover part of this route. Get in touch with your dates for a tailored quote.
