8-Day Kenya Classic Safari Itinerary: Amboseli, Naivasha, Nakuru & Masai Mara

This is our full grand tour of Kenya’s classic circuit: Amboseli under Kilimanjaro, a boat safari on Lake Naivasha, a cycling safari at Hell’s Gate, rhino country at Lake Nakuru, and three nights in the Masai Mara with two genuinely full game-drive days. It’s priced from $2,050pp in a private 4×4 with pop-up roof, no vehicle-sharing, and accommodation from comfortable tented camps to full luxury depending on what you choose. Here’s exactly what each of the 8 days looks like.

Last updated September 2026.

Day 1: Nairobi to Amboseli National Park

Your guide meets you in Nairobi and drives south towards Amboseli, with Kilimanjaro’s snow-capped peak rising over the plains as you approach. After lunch and check-in, you head straight out for an evening game drive: Amboseli is prime elephant country, with large herds moving across the dusty plains and giraffe, zebra and buffalo gathering around the swamps. Dinner and overnight at a lodge on the park’s edge with Kilimanjaro views.

Day 2: Full Day in Amboseli National Park

A full day of game viewing across Amboseli’s plains, swamps and wetlands, tracking the park’s famous big-tusked elephants alongside lion, cheetah, buffalo and large herds of zebra and wildebeest. Rather than heading back to the lodge for lunch, you stop for a picnic out in the wild, keeping you among the wildlife for longer. Overnight again at your Amboseli lodge.

Day 3: Amboseli to Lake Naivasha

lake naivasha boat ride

You leave Amboseli’s dusty plains for the Great Rift Valley and Lake Naivasha, a drive of roughly five hours. In the afternoon you board a boat and cruise the lake’s calm channels, approaching pods of hippos while African fish eagles circle overhead, then step ashore for a short walking safari among giraffe, zebra, waterbuck and antelope at the lakeshore sanctuary. Overnight at a lakeside property on Naivasha.

Day 4: Hell’s Gate National Park & Lake Nakuru

You swap the safari jeep for a bicycle at Hell’s Gate National Park, cycling beneath towering cliffs and volcanic formations as zebra, giraffe and gazelle roam around you โ€” one of the few places in Kenya where you experience the bush on two wheels rather than through a vehicle window. In the afternoon you continue to Lake Nakuru National Park, one of Kenya’s great rhino strongholds, where forests, escarpments and a soda lake create habitat for both white and black rhino, buffalo, giraffe, lion and leopard. Overnight at a lodge above Lake Nakuru.

Day 5: Lake Nakuru to Masai Mara National Reserve

A morning game drive through Lake Nakuru searching the woodland and lakeshore for rhino, buffalo and giraffe, then the road to the Masai Mara. En route you stop at a traditional Maasai village to meet the community, learn about their customs and warrior traditions, and watch a traditional dance performance. You continue into the Mara as the plains open up ahead. Dinner and overnight at your tented camp inside the reserve.

Day 6: Full Day Game Drive in the Masai Mara

Wildebeest gathering on the Mara River bank before a Great Migration crossing in Maasai Mara, Kenya
Moments before the crossing, thousands of wildebeest pause at the riverbankโ€”creating one of the most dramatic and emotional scenes of the Great Migration.

A full day in the Mara with your guide free to follow the wildlife rather than the clock โ€” tracking lion prides, watching cheetah from termite mounds, and following elephant and buffalo herds across the golden plains. A picnic lunch out in the bush keeps you in the heart of the action rather than back at camp. This is prime Big Five territory, home to some of the densest lion populations in Africa.

Day 7: Another Full Day in the Masai Mara

Your final full day in the Mara is yours to explore, with your guide reading the wildlife and following fresh leads โ€” perhaps a pride waking from the night’s hunt, or cheetah tracks across the open grass. You head towards the Mara River, where hippos wallow and crocodiles bask along the banks, before a picnic lunch in the bush and an afternoon exploring a different corner of the reserve. Sundowner drinks over the plains close out your final dinner and overnight at camp. Unlike our 5-day itineraries through the Mara, this is a genuine two full days of game driving, not one day plus an activity, since the extra length of this trip allows it.

Day 8: Return to Nairobi

After breakfast, transfer back to Nairobi for your onward flight or drop-off at your hotel, bringing your 8-day Kenya classic safari to a close.

How Long Are the Drives?

This is a long, varied route, so here’s what to expect leg by leg. None of the transfers are as punishing as a single Amboseli-to-Nakuru day would be, because this itinerary routes through Naivasha in between, breaking the journey into two more manageable days.

LegApprox. distanceApprox. drive time
Nairobi โ†’ Amboseli~240 km4 hrs
Amboseli โ†’ Lake Naivasha~305 km~5 hrs
Naivasha โ†’ Hell’s Gate โ†’ Lake Nakuru~80 km1.5โ€“2 hrs (plus cycling time)
Lake Nakuru โ†’ Masai Mara~265 km5โ€“6 hrs
Masai Mara โ†’ Nairobi~270 km5โ€“6 hrs

If you’d rather see how this compares to our shorter routes, our 5-day Amboseli, Nakuru & Mara itinerary covers three of these five destinations in less time, while our 5-day Naivasha, Nakuru & Mara itinerary skips Amboseli entirely for an easier drive.

Best Time to Go

This route works year-round, but timing affects two things most: Kilimanjaro’s visibility from Amboseli, clearest in the drier months (roughly June to October and January to February), and the Masai Mara’s wildlife density, at its peak from July to October when the wildebeest migration is often crossing the reserve. Lake Nakuru’s rhino sightings and Hell’s Gate’s cycling conditions hold up well in any season. For the full seasonal breakdown of the Mara specifically, see our best time to visit the Masai Mara guide. Pack for both dust and cold mornings across this route โ€” our what to wear on a Kenya safari guide covers it.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many full days does this itinerary spend in the Masai Mara?

Two genuine full game-drive days (Days 6 and 7), plus an arrival evening on Day 5 after the transfer from Nakuru. That’s more dedicated Mara time than our 5-day itineraries, which fit in one full day.

What’s the difference between the Classic and Culture & Photography 8-day safaris?

Both cover a similar 8-day span, but this Classic itinerary follows the Amboseli, Naivasha, Nakuru and Mara route with standard game drives throughout, while our Culture & Photography version is built around deeper cultural engagement and photography-focused timing. Check each package page for the specific day-by-day differences.

How much driving is involved over 8 days?

This route covers five distinct destinations, so there’s meaningful driving, but no single leg is as long as a direct Amboseli-to-Nakuru transfer would be, since the route passes through Naivasha in between. The longest single legs are Amboseli to Naivasha (~5 hours) and the two Nakuru/Mara/Nairobi legs (5โ€“6 hours each).

Will I see Mount Kilimanjaro from Amboseli?

Often, but not guaranteed, since Kilimanjaro is across the border in Tanzania and frequently cloud-covered, especially in the afternoon. Early morning and the drier months (June to October, January to February) generally give the best odds.

Is this a fully private safari?

Yes. You travel in your own private 4×4 with pop-up roof and dedicated guide throughout, with no vehicle-sharing at any point on the 8 days.

What accommodation is used on this safari?

Accommodation ranges from comfortable tented camps to fully luxury lodges depending on what you select, with a tented camp inside the Masai Mara reserve itself for the three Mara nights.

Do I need a visa to visit Kenya for this safari?

Most nationalities need an eTA (electronic travel authorisation) applied for online before you travel. See our Kenya visa requirements guide for the current process.

Can this itinerary be shortened or customised?

Yes โ€” if 8 days is more than you have, our 5-day and 7-day itineraries cover overlapping routes in less time. This 8-day version can also be adjusted with different accommodation tiers or add-ons like a hot air balloon safari. Get in touch with your dates for a tailored quote.
