The photograph above is of Tsavo & Taita, not of Kilaguni Serena Safari Lodge itself — we are waiting on the property's own images and would rather tell you that than let you assume. Ask us for current room photographs and we will send what the lodge has supplied us.

Kilaguni was one of the very first lodges built inside a Kenyan national park, and it has aged into the landscape rather than against it — built from local volcanic stone and timber, sitting below the green slopes of the Chyulu Hills.

The waterhole is the whole design. Every one of the fifty-six rooms faces it, as do the public areas. Elephant bring their calves down, giraffe drift past, and the scene changes through the day without you going anywhere. In a park as vast and thinly-trafficked as Tsavo West, having the wildlife come to you is a real advantage.

What makes this one different

Sundowners at Lion Rock

The lodge runs evening drinks up at Lion Rock, looking out over Tsavo West as the light goes. Tsavo is Kenya's largest park and one of its emptiest, so the view is genuinely uninterrupted — no other lodges, no other vehicles, just a great deal of Africa. It is the single thing guests mention most.

The rooms

Fifty-six rooms including five suites, across three distinct wings.

  • Two-storey block facing the waterhole
  • A cluster of stone cottages
  • A private suite enclave
  • 5 suites among the 56 rooms
  • Built from volcanic stone and wood
  • Uninterrupted waterhole and Chyulu Hills views

Dining and experiences

  • Bush breakfasts out in the park
  • Sundowners at Lion Rock
  • Game drives in Tsavo West
  • Mzima Springs within reach
  • Waterhole viewing from the lodge itself

When to come

The dry months, June to October and January to March, concentrate game around the waterholes and give the best road conditions.

Tsavo is low, hot and dusty. The rains in April, May and November cool it and turn it green, but some tracks become difficult.

Getting there

  • By road from Nairobi — about five hours.
  • By road from Mombasa — around four hours, which makes it workable on a beach combination.
  • By air — Kilaguni has its own airstrip beside the lodge.
The airstrip is right at the lodge, which is unusual and removes the transfer entirely if you fly in.
