Ngorongoro Serena Safari Lodge is built from river stone and set into the crater's outer rim, its low, curving stone passages and indigenous planting designed so the lodge is barely visible from a distance. Rooms are arranged around the rim itself, each with a rock-enclosed balcony looking directly down into the volcanic caldera, and a fire is kept burning at the heart of the lodge throughout the cooler months.
From this rim-top vantage guests can often pick out wildlife moving across the crater floor with the naked eye, part of an ecosystem that holds one of the densest concentrations of large mammals in Africa, including black rhino, lion, elephant, and enormous herds of grazing wildebeest and zebra. The crater's soda lake, Lake Magadi, regularly draws flamingos and other water birds into view as well.
PMK typically times the crater descent from Ngorongoro Serena Safari Lodge for early morning, when animals are most active and the light on the caldera floor is at its best. Your PMK guide will handle the conservation area permits and plan the day around your interests, whether that's predators, rhino, or birdlife.
